Stepping into foster care is a significant decision, and it can be intimidating. We’re here to walk with you through this journey. You are not alone.
6 STEPS TO BECOMING A FOSTER PARENT WITH DHS
You are needed. The process for becoming a foster parent may take up to six months. Make no mistake, you are needed!
STEP 1: Find out more
STEP 2: Make the decision
STEP 3: Complete THE application with DHS
STEP 4: Attend training
The training is called “Foundations” and is 24 hours. There are classes offered to fit your schedule on weeknights or weekends.
STEP 5: Home study
The homes tudy process begins with your assigned worker. This is a very thoughtful process consisting of a series of interviews, home visits, meeting your children and others who may also live in your home, safety/fire inspections and sometimes medical information from your doctor.
STEP 6: Accept a child placed into your home
Working together with DHS, you will decide which children best suit your family and home. Before a child comes into your home, you will be given information about the child to help you decide if the placement is right for you.
Thank you for answering the call! While this is a big decision and the process may sound a bit daunting, Embrace Oregon will provide support and encouragement along the way.
